We inherit two copies of each gene—one from each parent—and this combination can determine how certain traits or diseases are passed on from generation to generation.


There are approximately 20,000 to 25,000 genes in the human genome, and while many of these play a protective role, some genetic mutations or changes can increase the risk of developing diseases. 


These variations can be inherited (passed down from parents) or acquired (caused by environmental factors such as exposure to toxins, lifestyle choices, or radiation).

For instance, having a family history of heart disease doesn’t guarantee that someone will develop it, but it does increase the risk, especially when combined with lifestyle factors like diet and exercise.


Understanding your genetic predispositions can empower you to take preventive actions. For example, if genetic testing reveals an elevated risk for a condition like breast cancer, individuals may choose to undergo more frequent screenings or consider preventive treatments.

  • While genetic testing offers valuable insights, it’s important to approach it with care. The results of genetic tests can have emotional and psychological impacts, and interpreting these results accurately often requires the help of a healthcare professional or genetic counselor.
